Tips for choosing a loft bed for children

High beds for children are an excellent solution to gain space in children's and youth's bedrooms.

High beds for children are an excellent solution to gain space in children's and youth's bedrooms. Currently, there is a wide variety of models in different materials: one, two, and even three beds, modular bunk beds... If you opt for this solution for your child's bedroom, it is important that you inform yourself well before choosing.

From the classic bunk bed to the single loft bed

The classic children's bunk bed, (in which one bed is on top of the other) has come a long way in recent years. Now there are models that allow you to have three beds thanks to an extra trundle bed, bunk beds that incorporate a storage drawer, modular bunk beds that can be transformed into two beds when children grow, and also loft beds for one person that multiply the space of the bedroom since they allow to take advantage of the space that remains below.

The children's loft bed solves space problems when the room is small. Depending on the age of the child or teenager, the space under a loft bed can be used as a play area, a study area, or an entertainment area, since there is enough space for a sofa.

What to consider when choosing a children's loft bed

When choosing a loft bed for children it is important to look at:

Safety

When purchasing a loft bed or a  bunk bed for children, it is essential to ensure that it complies with the European Safety Regulations (UNE-EN 747-1), which establishes the requirements for safety, strength, and durability of loft beds. For this, it is important to acquire the furniture in a trusted store.

The material

For safety also, it is important that the bed is made of a resistant and stable material, such as steel or solid pine or beech wood.

measurements and height

Depending on the accessories you carry underneath and where the ladder goes, the loft bed can be between 2 and 2.50 meters long. To ensure that it will fit well into the room, you have to calculate very well the distance between the walls of the room at the height of the baseboard and also at the height of the ceiling (since the walls can be irregular).

In addition to the width of the room, you have to measure the height to calculate the distance that will remain from the bed to the ceiling (taking into account the thickness of the mattress) and also, the distance that will remain from the bed to the floor, which should not be less at 1.50 meters if it is to be used, for example, as a study area for a teenager.

Stairs

The ladder can go to the front or to the side, as in the high wooden bed in the photo. It must be well attached to the bed frame and the rungs must be resistant to support the weight.

Barrier or guardrail

Although high beds have a solid barrier fixed to the structure to prevent falls, depending on the age of the child, it may be advisable to add an additional guardrail that also covers the gap left in the access from the stairs.
