This photograph, taken in Boston in 1975, depicts a young woman and a little girl falling from a 15 meter high fire escape. The building they were in was on fire and they were attempting to escape when the fire ladder they were on came loose, causing them to fall to the ground. Tragically, the woman died from the impact, but the girl was saved as she landed on top of her. This photograph won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for photography and helped to bring about changes in the design of fire escapes. It remains a powerful and shocking image of a terrifying moment in history.
